The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has said the country aims to increase its renewables capacity to 220GW by 2022, up from a previous goal of 175GW.
Modi said in a speech at the Third Global Re-Invest conference this week that India currently has 136GW of clean power installed, representing about 36% of the country’s total generation.
He said India is becoming a preferred destination for investment in renewables, with over $64bn spent on clean power in the last six years.
“We want to make India a global manufacturing hub in the renewable energy sector,” Modi said.
He added that there was a big opportunity to invest in green power in the country.
“I invite investors, developers and businesses to join India’s renewable energy journey,” he said.
However, the Global Wind Energy Association, which announced the setting up of a local branch in India today, also warned that the country is at risk of not reaching 175GW by 2022 unless urgent issues are not addressed, such as grid and land availability and onerous tender conditions.
