Italian ministers have signed a decree that paves the way for 8GW of new renewable energy capacity to be up for grabs across seven support auctions out to September 2021.
Economic Minister Luigi Di Maio and Environment Minister Sergio Costa signed a final version of the decree late last week, Italy’s Economic Ministry said.
Di Maio said the decree will “boost the production of renewable energy, creating thousands of new jobs, focusing on the implementation of the energy transition with a view to decarbonization”.
The final draft of the decree has now been sent to Italy’s Court of Audit for approval.
The court is expected to sign off on the legislation within 30 days, which will allow the first of seven auctions to take place in September this year.
Onshore wind will compete with solar projects for support at upcoming auctions.
Bid prices of between between €21 and €68 per megawatt-hour are expected in the auctions, according to market sources.
The auctions will be run by state body Gestore dei Sevizi Energetici and are the first to take place in the country since 2016.
