Japan assists Indonesia to decarbonise power sector

Japan assists Indonesia to decarbonise power sector

Japanese energy and grid players have concluded an agreement for a survey on power sector decarbonisation in Indonesia.

Under the agreement, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), TEPCO Power Grid, JERA and Tokyo Electric Power Services will draw up a proposed roadmap that embodies the targeted power source structure and power supply system while taking into account the specific conditions in Indonesia fully.

The agreement is with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the proposed “Data Collection Survey on Power Sector in Indonesia for Decarbonization” survey will also consider measures that JICA could implement in Indonesia in support of the roadmap.

In July 2021 the government of Indonesia submitted a long-term strategy to the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that included efforts to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060.

The current agreement was concluded as part of JICA’s efforts to cooperate in the decarbonisation of Indonesia’s power sector and reflects its evaluation of the four companies’ extensive related experience.

TEPCO PG, the project supervisor, will survey and study power development and demand assumption, to make effective proposals for achieving carbon neutrality and power supply stability in the country.

TEPCO will survey and study energy policies, regulations, and economic and financial matters related to decarbonisation and will contribute to drawing up the proposed roadmap for decarbonisation of Indonesia’s power sector, focusing on institutional and financial aspects.

In Indonesia, which consists of many islands, JERA will aim to fully leverage the experience it has gained in drawing up a decarbonisation roadmap for Japan. It will survey and study low-carbon and decarbonised thermal power technologies and renewable energy.

Taking Indonesia’s unique circumstances fully into account, JERA said it will contribute to achieving low-cost and speedy decarbonisation while maintaining an energy supply.

TEPSCO has been working in Indonesia for a long time and aims to contribute to the success of the project by providing local support from its Jakarta office.
