Norway and Ukraine signed a comprehensive energy cooperation agreement covering renewable energy, networks, power markets and gas.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has destroyed large parts of the country’s energy infrastructure. In addition to military support, Ukraine is in “desperate need” for additional and urgent support for the energy sector.
The agreement facilitates Norwegian businesses to support the recovery and rebuilding of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and buildout of renewables.
The new energy agreement between the Norwegian and Ukrainian Ministries of Energy and was signed by Minister of Trade and Industry Cecilie Myrseth and Ukraine’s Minister of Energy Herman Halushchenko when they met in Berlin on Monday, 10 June.
“President Zelensky has emphasised that Ukraine wants a closer cooperation with Norwegian businesses.
“This is a message the Norwegian government cannot and will not ignore.
“We will contribute to facilitating a close and constructive cooperation between authorities, businesses, and civil society with Ukraine,” said Myrseth.
The Memorandum of Understanding between Norway and Ukraine, which covers key areas of the energy sector, such as gas, renewable energy, networks, and the operation of power markets, are areas where Norway has expertise and a strong business sector.
“I am pleased that this can be useful in Ukraine.
“The agreement will be a good supplement to other efforts, including donations of technical equipment that Norwegian power and grid companies have contributed since 2022,” said Norwegian Minister of Energy Terje Aasland.
