New York governor Andrew Cuomo has formally directed state officials to design an enforceable clean energy standard mandating that 50% of all electricity consumed by 2030 result from renewable energy sources.
“Climate change is one of the defining issues of our time, and we must act now,” said Cuomo.
“With one of the most aggressive renewable energy goals of any state in the nation, we are leading by example to ensure the possibility of a bright future for generations to come.”
The State Department of Public Service regulatory process will include public and stakeholder participation. Regulators are directed to present the new standard to the Public Service Commission by June 2016.
The clean energy standard will help New York meet its goal of reducing carbon emissions 40% by 2030.
