Northland hires new head for Scottish offshore duo

Northland Power and ESB have appointed a new project director to their joint offshore wind projects that are proposed off Scotland.

Martin Whyte will now lead the Spiorad na Mara and Havbredey projects, which are located off the west coast and the north-east of the Isle of Lewis, respectively.

Whyte, who brings over 16 years of experience in offshore wind, takes over from Tanya Davies, who led the projects since their inception in 2021.

Davies is leaving the project and Northland to pursue other opportunities and personal objectives.

The project partners and the team would like to thank Davies for her hard work to get the projects where they are today and wish her well for the future.

In his new role, Whyte will focus on strengthening relationships in Lewis and with all project stakeholders, as well as growing the team locally and in Edinburgh.

“We are pleased to welcome Martin to our team. Spiorad na Mara and Havbredey have the potential to convert some of the best wind energy in Europe into renewable electricity, bringing jobs, and local and regional investment to the area,” said Jennifer Snowball, vice president of offshore development, Northland Power.

“Martin’s experience, combined with his passion for collaborative working and designing projects in the right way for their environment, will be invaluable as we embark on an important year, submitting planning applications for Spiorad na Mara and submitting the Scoping Request for Havbredey.”

Whyte said: “I am excited to be joining at such an important time for these Scottish projects.

“I look forward to getting out and about, spending time in Lewis, listening and talking to people as we continue the development and design of both projects.”

Spiorad na Mara and Havbredey are owned by Northland Power (75.5%) and ESB (24.5%), with Northland leading on the development, construction and operation.
