The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) in Germany is to work with Air Products to identify potential ways of establishing a comprehensive hydrogen value chain across the port.
The two parties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding and will focus on “identifying real opportunities that would support the stimulation of hydrogen demand and subsequent decarbonisation of heavy-duty vehicles, including port logistics, and industry”.
Hamburg Senator for Economics and Innovation Michael Westhagemann said: “The interest of Air Products underlines the potential of the Port of Hamburg with regards to the development of a hydrogen infrastructure.
“I am very pleased that Air Products, with its global hydrogen expertise, is partnering with the Port of Hamburg in establishing a sustainable supply chain for hydrogen.
“This is an important part in Hamburg’s portfolio on the way to a climate-neutral port.”
Hamburg Port Authority chief executive Jens Meier said: “The HPA is committed to future-proof and innovative technologies and their use in the port, thus supporting decarbonization and the City of Hamburg’s Clean Air Plan.
“This MoU is a further step on our way to taking concrete action here.”
Air Products vice president Northern Continent Kurt Lefevere said: “Ports and their industrial clusters in Hamburg and around the world, have a critical role to play in expanding hydrogen’s role in the energy transition,.
