The Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (REA) has welcomed the energy and climate commitments in the Liberal Democrats manifesto for the 2024 general election.
The manifesto recognises immediate and clear need for action when it comes to UK energy policy and incorporates several REA calls.
Nina Skorupska, CEO of the REA, said: “It is fantastic to see the Liberal Democrat manifesto recognising the immediate and clear need for action when it comes to UK energy policy and in line with our own REA calls in many policies.
“We’re pleased to see several positive steps on climate and energy on this front.
“The 90% renewable power target by 2030 is an ambitious target and welcome but should go further to increase ambition in heat and transport too.
A number of REA calls from its First 100 Days action plan are in the manifesto, including the need for more joined up thinking and prioritisation at the highest level of government, more renewables, a spatial plan for grid networks and support for electric vehicles.
The manifesto recognises the need for a wide range of policies and technologies to deliver the energy transition, including delivering more solar capacity and implementing “a well thought out” Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
Skorupska added: “We look forward to working with the Liberal Democrats over the coming election period and beyond, to ensure the UK’s role as a global leader in climate change is restored.”
