RWE as become a member of the recently launched European Clean Hydrogen Alliance (ECH2A).
The ECH2A was set up by the European Commission to build the region’s “global leadership” in hydrogen and to support the EU’s commitment to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
RWE said it is “convinced of the role” hydrogen can have in the energy transition.
The German energy company said it sees opportunities for the use of hydrogen within its operations, largely due to its large portfolio of renewable generation, which can be used in the production of hydrogen using electrolysers.
The company also has “both the experience and the knowledge” to produce the gas as well as the capability to store it in gas storage facilities, which it owns.
ECH2A intends to bring together renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production, transmission and distribution as well as demand from industry, mobility and other sectors.
The work of the alliance will be structured around six industrial pillars, connecting supply and demand for clean hydrogen.
