An SNP MP has demanded clarity from the UK Government on what action is being taken to address high grid costs for Scottish renewables projects.
In a letter to Westminster’s energy minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan (pictured), the MP for Aberdeen South Stephen Flynn claimed that renewables projects in Scotland are “paying in excess of £4 per unit” to access the grid.
He contrasted this with projects in the south east of England, which Flynn claims are “in fact paid £1 per unit to access the very same grid”.
“It’s clear for all to see that the system of grid charging has long since been out of date and reflects neither the need for new and complementary technologies as part of the drive towards net-zero, nor the wider economic benefits which development can bring,” stated the letter, seen by reNEWS.
“Scotland has the ability to lead Europe in the renewables field and no unnecessary barriers should be placed in the way of that.”
The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) said that Trevelyan would respond to the letter in due course.
