The South African Government has granted a large green hydrogen project Strategic Integrated Project (SIP) status.
This government SIP legislation aims to accelerate the development of vital infrastructure, positioning South Africa at the forefront of the green hydrogen sector.
The Phelan Green Hydrogen project will require an investment of $2.5bn and will be built in Saldanha, in the Western Cape.
This project will create over 2500 jobs in the local community and will take four years to build.
The first green hydrogen derivatives will be exported from 2026.
Paschal Phelan, Phelan Green Energy’s Chairman, said: “This transformative project is the culmination of three years intensive work by the Phelan team; to define an optimum standard size installation for lowest cost production, acquire 6000+ha of suitable land, together with planning approvals, innovative engineering and strategic financial planning.”
