As part of the decarbonisation of its European refineries, TotalEnergies is launching a call for tenders for the supply of 500,000 tons per year of green hydrogen.
The company has six refineries in Europe, in Antwerp (Belgium), Leuna (Germany), Zeeland (Netherlands), Normandy, Donges, Feyzin (France) and two biorefineries in La Mède and Grandpuits (France), all of which consume hydrogen.
TotalEnergies wants to replace 500,000 tons of this hydrogen consumed by its refineries with green hydrogen from renewable energies by 2030.
This is a major project that will contribute to achieving TotalEnergies’ objective of reducing its net greenhouse gas emissions directly related to its oil and gas operations (Scope 1+2) by 40% in 2030 compared to 2015.
“This massive call for tenders is part of TotalEnergies’ objective to decarbonise all hydrogen consumed in its European refineries by 2030.
“Alongside the already identified green and low-carbon hydrogen production projects with which the company has partnered with La Mède, Grandpuits, Leuna and Normandie, we are calling on third-party producers to provide us with the green hydrogen we need and accelerate the decarbonisation of our operations.
“We hope to benefit from the most competitive solutions developed by various suppliers around the world by offering them the opportunity to have access to medium and long-term contracts with TotalEnergies,” said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies.
This call for tenders is in addition to the projects already announced.
In La Mède, the Masshylia project, in partnership with Engie, which aims to produce green hydrogen for the needs of the biorefinery, is underway.
In Grandpuits, TotalEnergies and Air Liquide aim to build an innovative and circular system to produce 20,000 tons per year of partly renewable hydrogen through the recycling of residual biogas from the biorefinery.
In June 2023, TotalEnergies and VNG, a German natural gas distribution company, signed an agreement for the future supply of green hydrogen to the Leuna refinery.
TotalEnergies and Air Liquide signed an agreement in September 2023 for the future supply of up to 15,000 tonnes of green and low-carbon hydrogen to the TotalEnergies platform in Normandy.
