The UK’s Energy Bill has become law, setting in stone the early closure of the Renewables Obligation for new onshore wind projects.
The bill also makes local communities the main decision makers on new onshore wind developments.
It also shifts responsibility for consent for onshore wind farms over 50MW in England and Wales away from ministers and back to local authorities.
Opposition attempts to force changes to rules for grace period projects, which have until end-March 2017 to come online, were unsuccessful.
Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Amber Rudd (pictured) said: “The Energy Act is a vital part of our plan to ensure our families and businesses have access to secure, affordable and clean energy supplies they can rely on, while keeping bills down.”
