The UK government has refused to rule out leaving the EU internal energy market following the publication of its Brexit white paper.
London said it is “considering all options” for the country’s relationship with EU rules for cross-border trading in electricity and gas.
EU legislation underpins trading through existing interconnectors, including Ireland, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
There are also plans for further electricity interconnections between the UK and EU member states.
The white paper stated however that the existing energy trading arrangements “help to ensure lower prices and improved security of supply” for both the UK and EU nations.
The UK government also said it is keen to “avoid disruption” to the all-Ireland single electricity market operating across the island of Ireland.
