National Planning Policy Framework needs to be updated to prioritise net zero and renewable energy, according to trade group Regen.
Regen is urging the next government to adopt these recommendations to ensure the planning system for renewables and storage projects no longer impedes development, while at the same time ensuring communities remain at the heart of these projects and decisions.
Amending the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) is one of five policy changes Regen is calling for in a white paper.
The others include calling for measures that improve the roles of local authority planners to address resourcing challenges, for the NPPF to be updated to provide greater clarity on ensuring a balance between landscape protection and the need to address climate change and removal of restrictions on onshore wind in England.
It is also calling for publication of best practice guidance on community engagement and benefits for all onshore renewables and take forward the findings of the 2015 Shared Ownership Taskforce.
