UK research organisation TWI and the University of Bedfordshire are to establish the Renewables Innovation Centre at the former’s Cambridge headquarters.
TWI said the jointly-funded project would be a hub for engineering-based renewables research and development aimed at bringing “new enabling and disruptive technologies to market”.
The Renewables Innovation Centre will aim to develop “innovative technologies that can enhance the performance and efficiency of low carbon power generation assets leading to improved efficiency and reduced operational and maintenance costs,” it added.
Research will focus on asset management for the renewables sector, including maintenance, inspection and monitoring services plus installation, commissioning and decommissioning, and others.
TWI team manager for condition and structural health monitoring Angela Angulo (pictured, centre) has been appointed as director.
“Our vision for the new centre is for it to be the next generation leader and premier reference point for research and advancement in the renewables industry,” she said.
TWI director of innovation and skills Professor Tat-Hean Gan added: “The innovation centre will use both public and private funding to develop new technologies and re-invest the centre’s income to grow its technical and intellectual capability.”
