A lack of government support could damage the UK’s push to convert industry to clean energy, according to a new report.
The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) said today London must back moves to support low-carbon energy.
It singled out Yorkshire and the Humber as potential “low-carbon industrial” zones that have “several strategic advantages” including access to energy resources and infrastructure.
General secretary Frances O’Grady said the government has a “golden opportunity” to prompt a shift to green energy.
“With government backing, Yorkshire and the Humber can pioneer the technologies Britain needs to be a global leader in low-carbon industry,” he said.
“It would create good quality jobs and boost the UK economy. But if ministers fail to back projects like this, British industry will soon fall behind the EU.”
The study – Industrial regions and climate policies: towards a just transition – is being launched today.
