The UK government will set out further details on how it intends to make progress towards its 2050 net zero carbon emissions target later this autumn.
The UK Treasury announced in its 2019 spending round that the government will publish the net zero policies in a new National Infrastructure Strategy.
The Treasury also said it will provide energy department BEIS with an additional £30m to “accelerate progress on developing decarbonisation schemes”.
“We’re stepping up our leadership on climate change, with new funding for BEIS to develop new programmes to help meet our net zero commitment by 2050,” added Chancellor Sajid Javid (pictured).
Greenpeace said the spending round commitments fell “woefully short” of addressing climate change and expressed concern that the 2050 net zero target could become “just another empty politician’s promise”.
“The autumn budget needs to devote at least 5% of government spending to preserving the climate and nature if we’re to limit the damage to what our society and economy can withstand,” added UK head of politics Rebecca Newsom.
“Today’s statement missed the opportunity and simply kicked the can down the road.”
