The Trump administration has opened a national security investigation into the import of wind turbines and components.
The so-called Section 232 probe, which was opened earlier his month but only became public late yesterday, could push tariffs higher for the sector, according to Reuters.
The Commerce Department is seeking comments on the how OEMs are meeting US demand for wind turbines.
It is also calling for input on “the impact of foreign government subsidies and predatory trade practices on the competitiveness of the wind turbines and their parts and components industry”.
Some analysts have suggested the development may have greater implications for proponents of offshore wind farms currently in construction off the US east coast.
The department added turbines to a list of products that will fact 50% tariffs earlier this week, the latest in a string of attempts by President Donald Trump (pictured) to stymie the wind sector.
