UK developer Vital Energi has reached financial close for an 18MW energy-from-waste plant in Burton Upon Trent, Staffordshire.
The facility will generate power from non-recyclable refuse derived fuel and will be designed, built, owned and operated by Vital Energi, the company said.
“The UK faces many environmental challenges and this facility is an exciting opportunity to reduce carbon emissions and divert waste from landfill,” said project development director Ashley Malin.
“We are extremely excited to be delivering and operating this facility, which will make a positive contribution to the UK’s low-carbon infrastructure.”
Once operational the facility will divert 169,000 tonnes of non-recyclable refuse to produce fuel annually.
Vital said a mix of both internal and external financing will be used to fund the facility, which is due to be operational by 2023.
The site will be run for 30 years and be located on land leased from energy developer Eon.
