Wales has set a target to consume 70% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2030.
Welsh cabinet secretary for the environment Lesley Griffiths announced the goal, which also includes plans for 1GW of renewable energy capacity in Wales to be locally-owned by 2030.
The country also expects that by 2020 new renewables projects will have “at least an element of local ownership”.
Wales consumed 32% of its electricity from clean power sources last year, Griffiths said.
“Wales must be able to compete in global low carbon markets, particularly now we face a future outside the EU,” she said.
“The ability to meet our needs from clean energy is the foundation for a prosperous low carbon economy.”
Griffiths added that the Welsh government will need to take action to deliver the targets and also called on the UK government to “deliver on areas not devolved to Wales”.
