Schottel Hydro subsidiary Black Rock Tidal Power has reappraised its plans for a tidal energy project in Canada’s Bay of Fundy.
Black Rock had planned to deploy next year the 2.5MW Triton device, featuring 40 Schottel Hydro-made 62kW turbines, fixed to the seabed at a berth at the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (Force) near Parrsboro.
However, following a revision of business strategy by Schottel, Black Rock and another subsidiary TidalStream, the tidal project at Force will now focus on smaller floating platforms such as Sustainable Marine Energy’s Plat-I platform.
Black Rock president Nils Hirsch said work on Triton had been important and would be “preserved” to provide “considerable value to future projects”.
Schottel Hydro managing director Niel Lange said: “Schottel Hydro and its subsidiaries remain convinced about the positive future of the tidal energy sector in Nova Scotia, and around the world.
“We remain committed to tidal energy power generation and firmly believe in its viability. We will initially focus on modular, scalable floating platforms.”
