The Bay of Fundy Inshore Fishermen’s Association has appeared in court to prevent the construction of two OpenHydro 2MW tidal turbines in Nova Scotia.
The fishermen are seeking to overturn the province’s approval of a monitoring programme for OpenHydro and local utility Emera’s Cape Sharp Tidal joint venture at the Minas Passage.
The case was heard for the first time in a Nova Scotia courtroom on Thursday after it filed an application for a judicial review on 22 July.
The fishermen argue that the Nova Scotia environment department’s programme does not contained enough baseline science to ensure the project will not hurt the fishing industry.
“It’s a sad day for Nova Scotia that the fishermen of this province are being forced to spend their hard-earned dollars to fight their own government to defend environmental integrity,” said Bay of Fundy Inshore Fishermen’s Association spokesman Colin Sproul.
