UK tidal developer Simec Atlantis Energy has secured an order from Japanese utility Kyuden Mirai Energy for a project off Naru Island in Nagasaki prefecture.
Atlantis will supply an AR-series machine and associated balance-of-plant for the 1800m yen (€15m) project due to be installed by November 2020.
The device will be deployed initially in a demonstration capacity operating at a reduced generation output of around 500kW for data collection and validation purposes.
Completion of the demonstration is slated for the first quarter of 2021.
Atlantis said there is a possibility to upgrade the project to full output following completion.
The Edinburgh developer will be responsible for the supply, installation and operation of the turbine system, inclusive of foundation and cable supply.
“This is our largest awarded export contract to date and our partnership with Kyuden Mirai Energy is representative of the leadership position Atlantis has taken in exporting Scottish know how and expertise into new international markets,” said chief executive Tim Cornelius.
Atlantis has brought in Orkney offshore energy construction specialist Green Marine to bolster construction, planning and installation support for the cable and foundation.
“This is an important development for the global tidal energy sector and we are pleased to be at the forefront of the internationalisation of an industry that is now on a steep growth trajectory,” said Green Marine managing director Jason Schofield.
“We look forward to getting into the detailed engineering and planning over the coming months and the final installation offshore in the Goto Islands along with Japanese companies,” he added.
