Atlantis Resources has commissioned Pembroke consultancy MarineSpace to manage the paperwork for the decommissioning and removal of the tidal developer’s SeaGen device from Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland.
MarineSpace will be responsible for the delivery of the environmental impact assessment for the decommissioning along with securing the necessary permissions for work to commence.
During the final stages of decommissioning, MarineSpace will provide continuity with additional technical and environmental services.
Technical director Joseph Kidd has been involved in the SeaGen project from its early stages while working for the then Siemens-owned Marine Current Turbines.
Kidd said SeaGen has played a significant role in increasing understanding of the potential environmental impacts of tidal energy projects at what is regarded as one of the most sensitive sites in Europe.
“Further lessons will be learnt from the decommissioning of the SeaGen device, with work being planned to ensure it is removed efficiently whilst mitigating any potential environmental impact,” he said.
