OpenHydro is to replace fastening components on the Cape Sharp Tidal joint venture’s two open-centre tidal turbines because of a problem with internal metal components.
The JV between the Irish tidal turbine maker and Nova Scotia utility Emera said an investigation traced the issue to a supplier.
“Last week, lab testing confirmed that a risk exists with the long-term durability of this component,” it said.
The components are used to secure part of the turbine generator in position, and could fail prematurely if not replaced, the company added.
It stressed that the problem is not with the turbine design, but with incorrectly supplied components.
The component is inside the turbine so the rotor must be removed to gain access.
Work has started on one of the turbines “as it is already in a horizontal position”, while OpenHydro is currently considering options for replacing the components in the other unit.
Cape Sharp Tidal said it is not yet in a position to provide an update on deployment timelines as it is dependent on remedying the situation.
“We will continue to update stakeholders with new information as it becomes available,” it said.
