Nova Innovation has secured €2.25m funding from the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 SME Instrument programme to develop a direct drive tidal turbine.
The Scottish outfit will use the cash to produce a commercial demonstrator of its D2T2 direct drive technology.
Direct drive machines offer the promise of lower operating costs, improved reliability and increased energy output.
Nova director Simon Forrest said: “This will be a major breakthrough for the sector globally – driving down the cost of tidal energy by improving the reliability, efficiency and maintainability of tidal turbines.
“We are looking forward to bringing this innovation to a commercial reality so that it can be exported throughout the world.”
The D2T2 project has a total expenditure of €3.2m and will run for 30 months. The project will be carried out in Scotland.
