Work has started to remove Australian wave developer Oceanlinx’s MK1 device marooned off the coast of New South Wales for the past seven years.
Sydney outfit Polaris Marine is due to complete by April the removal of the 500kW full-scale wave energy converter prototype installed in 2005.
The first stage of the removal involved a 50-tonne section of the steel structure that became dislodged following storms in June.
After being decommissioned in 2009, the rusty structure remained in the water off the coast of Port Kembla near Wollongong.
While plans to remove the device were in progress, Oceanlinx fell into bankruptcy in April 2014.
