Cape Sharp Tidal will next month retrieve its 2MW OpenHydro turbine installed in Canada’s Bay of Fundy after missing its planned weather window.
The joint venture between tidal turbine fabricator OpenHydro and local utility Emera is now planning for the retrieval operation in the next available tidal window in early May.
Retrieval trials are scheduled this week at the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE).
Cape Sharp Tidal spokeswoman Stacey Pineau said the turbine was successfully disconnected from the transmission cable at the Nova Scotia site on 21 April.
“We made a decision not to proceed with retrieval during this window. This decision is based on operational timing and thorough planning, which ensures all activities are conducted in the safest manner possible,” she added.
Cape Sharp Tidal is retrieving the whole turbine system to make adjustments and upgrades to components in the OpenHydro turbine control centre.
The device was deployed at FORCE last November.
