Tocardo Tidal Power is preparing to deploy the InToTidal project at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney.
The company said a device being used for preliminary tests arrived at Hatston Pier in Kirkwall on 13 February.
It is the start of Tocardo’s planned 20-year commercial demonstration project at the site for the semi-submersible Universal Foundation System platform, which features five 300kW devices.
The next installation is foreseen in Canada at the FORCE and Petit Passage locations, the company said.
The project is led by Tocardo, and as well as EMEC includes Leask Marine and French research institute IFREMER.
Tocardo Tidal Power chief executive Hans van Breugel said: “Our work at EMEC is an important step in de-risking and improving Tocardo’s offshore tidal power technology.”
