The US Department of Energy (DoE) is providing $12m to help develop four wave energy initiatives.
Two projects will test and validate wave energy converter prototypes in open water, DoE said.
“The tests will demonstrate wave energy’s potential to compete with other forms of energy in the longer term,” it added.
The other two projects will address important early-stage marine and hydrokinetic (MHK) energy technology development challenges, DoE said.
AquaHarmonics and California Wave Power Technologies will both receive funding to upscale and test the companies’ wave energy devices.
Portland State University’s DoE cash will help develop a multistage, magnetically geared generator with airtight casing to improve the cost, reliability and efficiency of MHK devices.
ReVision Consulting’s grant will help integrate wave measurements from radar and buoys to better predict ocean waves and provide data to wave energy controllers.
