There was a record 62GW of wind energy installed in 2015, a 25% increase on the previous year, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance.
Some 58GW was installed onshore up 20% on 2014, with 4GW offshore, a four-fold increase on last year.
BNEF said onshore wind was driven by growth in China, which saw 29GW installed up from the previous record of 21GW.
China installed almost as much onshore wind as the rest of the world combined in 2015.
Offshore, Germany topped the list with 2.6GW installed. This was mainly due to delays in 2014 to offshore converted, BNEF said. The UK was in second spot with 1GW installed last year.
Goldwind dominated the market in China with almost one-quarter of the newly-installed capacity (7.7GW). Guodian United Power was in second spot with 2.9GW, followed by Envision and Ming Yang with 2.7GW each.
The US was in second spot overall behind China with 8.6GW, followed by Germany (3.7GW), India (2.6GW) and Brazil (2.6GW).
