The energy industry has reacted with a combination of anger and resilience to Donald Trump’s decision to pull the US out of the Paris Accord, while calling on other nations to keep up the fight against climate change.
“Trump has taken a huge, stupid, selfish step backwards and he’ll go down in history as a supervillain,” Juliet Davenport, the chief executive of UK renewable energy supplier Good Energy, said.
“But Trump can’t halt the global march towards a safer, cleaner, fairer future,” she added.
Scottish utility SSE said it strongly supports the UK and Ireland’s ratification of the 2015 agreement, signed by almost 200 countries.
“There is common interest across the world in minimizing the increase in global average temperature and in increasing the ability to adapt to adverse impacts of climate change,” the company said.
RenewablesUK, meanwhile, said a current “boom” in global renewables wouldn’t be stopped in its tracks.
“Far from putting America first, withdrawing from action on climate change means that President Trump has put the US behind the rest of the world,” the industry lobby group said.
