Spanish renewables developer Acciona has increased its greenhouse gas reduction target to cut emissions from direct and consumed energy by 60% by 2030, compared with a 17% reduction goal previously.
The company said it was aligning its objectives with the most ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5° Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
Acciona said it also plans to cut its value chain GHG emissions by 47%.
It added that the commitment has been validated by the Science Based Target (SBTi) initiative.
SBTi provides the scientific criteria necessary to determine the percentage of emission reduction that each company has to carry out.
Acciona said the new objective is part of the company’s strategy to face the climatic emergency and promote low carbon activities.
The company has been carbon neutral since 2016.
Acciona said it will continue to voluntarily compensate 100% of the emissions that are not likely to be reduced.
This emission compensation is carried out by acquiring emission reduction certificates granted by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
