Vattenfall and Dutch electricity utility Liander are part of an EU-funded project installing the first flexible electric vehicle (EV) charging network in Amsterdam.
Flexpower is designed to use renewable energy produced by households’ solar panels in local areas to provide electricity for EV chargers.
The intelligent network of charging stations in the project will encourage EV drivers to recharge their cars during off peak times, by enabling faster charging.
The Flexpower initiative will help prepare Amsterdam for the growth in vehicle electrification and could also provide a solution with potential for rolling out to other cities.
According to Vattenfall e-mobility head Tomas Bjornsson, the project will demonstrate the reduced need for investment in the power grid and “makes the solution a model for many major European cities.”
Other partners on Flexpower are ElaadNL, the University of Applied Sciences Amsterdam and the City of Amsterdam.
