Vattenfall is building a pilot plant that will produce fossil fuel-free steel using hydrogen.
The renewable energy developer is working with Swedish steel group SSAB and the mining group LKAB on the Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology (HYBRIT) project.

The plant, located in Lulea in northern Sweden, will enter operation this summer.
HYBRIT aims to show how green hydrogen production at scale can reduce total Swedish carbon dioxide emissions by up to 10%.
Vattenfall is also investigating other industrial processes where green hydrogen can make a “significant contribution” to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, such as refineries, cement production and production of raw materials in the chemical industry.
