A former landfill site in Aberdeen is to be redeveloped into an 8MW solar farm to power a hydrogen production facility and refuelling station for buses and trucks, according to bp Aberdeen Hydrogen Energy Limited (bpAHEL).
The joint venture between Aberdeen City Council and bp has appointed RSK Renewables to deliver engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and testing of the project at the Ness Landfill site beside Nigg Bay.
Construction is expected to start early next year, with around 50 to 60 civil engineering and electrical specialists on site at peak.
RSK Renewables managing director Adrian Strudwick said: “We identified a custom ‘tree-type’ mounting system as the optimal solution. This innovative design minimises ground disturbance, preserving the integrity of the former landfill’s protective capping while securely and efficiently supporting the solar array.”
The project will use more than 11,000 Trina solar modules, 16 Sungrow inverters and a Sungrow medium-voltage station to connect to the grid.
Strudwick added that the design avoids the need for concrete or ballasted foundations, reducing the project’s CO₂ impact.
RSK will also provide two years of operations and maintenance support following commissioning.
