Spanish company Acciona is to acquire a portfolio of solar farms totalling 3GW and 1GW of energy storage from US company Tenaska for an undisclosed price.
The transaction covers 20 projects located in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri, within the scope of the PJM Interconnection and Southwest Power Pool markets.
Tenaska – through Tenaska Solar Ventures, the company’s solar development services business – will work with Acciona to complete development of the projects.
Eight projects from the portfolio will go into service before the end of 2023, adding around 1.5GW of peak power to Acciona’s renewable energy assets in North America.
The company already has more than 1245MW of wind power capacity installed or under construction in the US, as well as owning and operating a 64MW concentrated solar power plant near Las Vegas.
Acciona energy division director Rafael Esteban said: “This operation represents an opportunity for Acciona to increase our commitment to renewable energy and sustainability in the US through photovoltaic and energy storage technology, after the investments we have already made in wind power.”
Tenaska Solar Ventures senior vice president Steve Johnson said: “We are excited to join forces with Acciona on this renewables portfolio, pairing Tenaska’s extensive expertise in development with their origination and construction capabilities.
“This transaction highlights Tenaska’s ability to monetise our team’s knowledge and skill sets while operating under various development models.”
