Canadian Solar has secured rights to build three solar photovoltaic projects totalling nearly 400MW, following recent auctions in Brazil.
The developer was awarded 393.7MW of capacity in two private corporate auctions, comprising a 190.5MW project in Pernambuco, a 76.2MW development in Ceara and a 127MW facility Minas Gerais.
Construction of the Pernambuco and Ceara plants will start in 2021, with commercial operations by the end of 2022.
The Ceara facility is an expansion of the existing Lavras PV farm.
Most of the electricity generated by the two plants will be sold to COPEL Energia, a Brazilian energy trading company, under two 15-year power purchase agreements.
The Minas Gerais project is expected to reach commercial operation by January 2023.
Most of the energy generated by that project will be bought by one of the country’s largest electric utilities, which was not named, under a long-term PPA.
Canadian Solar has over 2GW of awarded and contracted PPAs in Latin America, with around half of this in Brazil.
Canadian Solar chief executive Shawn Qu said: “We are proud to be the only company that has been successful in winning projects in all six federal energy auctions held to date in Brazil and now winning our first batch of corporate PPAs in this booming market.”
