The Chilean government has given environmental approval to SolarReserve’s 390MW Likana solar project with thermal energy storage in the Antofagasta region of the South American country.
The plant, which will have 5.1 gigawatt-hours of energy storage, is the third SolarReserve project to gain government approval.
Likana will comprise three 130MW solar thermal towers, each with 13 hours of full load energy storage, SolarReserve said.
The company said the plant will operate at a capacity factor and availability percentage equal to that of a fossil-fired power plant.
SolarReserve senior vice president of development Tom Georgis said: “The Likana project will help lower electricity costs for Chilean families and businesses, while safeguarding grid stability.”
SolarReserve will be bidding energy and associated capacity from Likana and its other Chilean projects in the upcoming auction for firm energy supply issued annually by Chile’s power distribution companies.
