Enel has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Mondelez International to supply the confectionary brand owner with solar electricity.
Mondelez International will purchase energy delivered to the electricity grid from a 65MW portion of Enel Green Power North America’s 497MW Roadrunner photovoltaic (PV) project in Texas.
Roadrunner is being built in Upton County.
Enel Green Power head Antonia Cammisecra said: “The PPA with Mondelez reaffirms Enel Green Power’s role as the partner of choice for corporate customers and shows that a wide range of industrial players are getting on board with the energy transition, understanding that renewables are not only a sustainable but also a cost-effective source of energy.”
The energy supplied by the 65MW portion is enough to produce over 50% of all the Oreos consumed in the US annually, equivalent to around 10 billion cookies, and will reduce Mondelez International’s annual carbon dioxide emissions by 80,000 metric tonnes.
The first phase of Roadrunner has a capacity of 252MW and is expected to be completed by the end of 2019, while the second 245MW phase is expected to be completed in 2020.
Roadrunner is set to be the largest solar facility in Enel’s US portfolio.
