Google has signed its first power purchase agreement for renewable electricity in Asia with a 10MW solar project in Taiwan.
The deal with the unnamed project, which Google said is part of a larger array, is the result of a collaboration between the company, the Taiwanese authorities and development partners – Diode Ventures, Taiyen Green Energy, J&V Energy and New Green Power.
The project will be located 100km south of Google’s Changhua County data centre and comprise 40,000 solar panels.
Panels will be mounted on poles above commercial fishing ponds (pictured) to maximise land use, respect the ecology and provide local economic benefits by compensating fisherman for hosting the project, the company said.
“For Google, the solar purchase agreement provides a long-term and fixed electricity price to support our operations in Taiwan; it will also boost the carbon-free profile of our local data centre,” Google added.
