Grenergy has signed a strategic agreement with battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co (CATL) for the supply of batteries for phase four of the 2GW/11GWh Oasis de Atacama solar/storage project in Chile, which will begin construction in the coming weeks.
CATL will supply Gabriela with 1.25GWh of its EnerX model containers that comprises more than 7100 modules, which stands out for its high energy storage density and safety at high altitude of 4000 metres above sea level, allowing a greater amount of energy to be captured in less space, and uses LFP technology, making it a safe and reliable.
Located in northern Chile, Oasis de Atacama has a storage capacity of 11GWh and a solar capacity of 2GW. With an overall investment of $2.3bn, it will produce 5.5TWh of energy annually.
Grenergy has already agreed to sell the energy from the first four phases, with the remaining stages in advanced negotiation.
“The collaboration with CATL is a fundamental milestone to consolidate Oasis de Atacama,” said Grenergy executive chairman David Ruiz de Andrés.
“We are excited to have signed this first contract and to be working with the world’s leading battery manufacturers on a project that will make industry history.”
Chief customer officer and president of ESS at CATL Tan Libin said: “CATL remains steadfast in its commitment to accelerating a sustainable energy future worldwide.
“By collaborating with Grenergy on this pivotal project in the Chilean Atacama Desert, a region renowned for its abundant solar resources, we’re excited to empower the Chilean people with consistent and reliable access to clean electricity through our state-of-the-art energy storage solutions.”
