NextEra Energy Resources is to continue a project to build, own and operate 17MW of solar facilities across three separate military installations in Oahu, Hawaii.
The company, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy, will use one of its own subsidiary companies to build a ground-mounted fixed-tilt solar system, three carport solar systems and 10 rooftop solar systems. The systems will use 71,000 Sharp solar modules.
Preparation of the site has started with system construction scheduled to begin in February 2016 and finish by the end of 2016. The power will be purchased by the US Navy under a 25-year power purchase agreement.
NextEra Energy Resources president Armando Pimentel said: “The Department of Defense and the US Navy have set aggressive goals for the use of renewable energy sources at their installations across the nation, and we’re pleased to be able to help them achieve their goals.
“This renewable energy project further illustrates our commitment to renewable energy, the Department of Defense and the state of Hawaii.”
The project originally saw Pacific Energy Solutions selected as developer in 2011 but in October 2015, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources purchased the membership interest in PES.
