OX2 has secured EPBC environmental approval to build the 135MW Muswellbrook solar and storage project in New South Wales.
The site is adjacent to the Muswellbrook Coal Mine, which closed in 2022, on land owned primarily by Idemitsu Australia.
Developed in partnership with Idemitsu, the scheme already has development approval and is part of a plan to turn the former mine into an industrial and energy hub.
OX2 Australia director of development Catherine Way said the project is an early mover in re-purposing coal mines for energy generation and a test case for the Upper Hunter Valley’s transition.
Muswellbrook is OX2’s second Australian project to receive EPBC approval, following the 90MW Summerville solar and storage scheme in July.
Country manager Stephen Symons said the approvals show the professionalism of the team and reflect the momentum of renewable energy in Australia.
OX2’s Australian portfolio totals 3.7GW of solar, wind and storage under development and construction, with 390MW under management.
