The US is on track to add 12.4GW of new solar capacity in 2017, with more than 4.4GW added in the first six months of the year, according to a new report by GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA).
The US Solar Market Insight Report found that 2387MW was added in the second quarter, up from 2044MW in the first quarter of the year.
The second quarter figure represents an 8% year-on-year gain, GTM and SEIA said.
More than 1GW of the new capacity in the second quarter was utility-scale, while 437MW was added in the non-residential sector and 563MW in residential.
The report also predicts that the US solar industry will triple cumulative capacity over the next five years.
But, GTM warned, trade relief, which is being considered by the US International Trade Commission, “would result in a substantial downside revision to our forecast”.
