Vattenfall strikes German solar PPA with chemical company

Kenlov Renewable Energy signs first PPA

Vattenfall will supply around 120GWh of solar power per year to specialty chemicals company Evonik under a new long-term electricity supply contract.

From 2025, two Vattenfall solar farms in Schleswig-Holstein will supply power to Evonik.

One of the solar farms is located south of Flensburg in Silberstedt, while the company is still to confirm details about the second location.

Both are scheduled to be completed and connected to the grid in 2025 with a total capacity of 120MW.

Vattenfall and Evonik expect this collaboration to provide investment security, security of supply with green electricity and risk diversification for both sides. The current agreements are valid for 10 years.

“Germany is the fastest growing market for renewable energies in Europe,” said Martijn Hagens, responsible board member and head of the markets division at Vattenfall.

“We see diverse growth opportunities here for the development and marketing of our solar, onshore and offshore projects. As the project with Evonik shows, electricity partnerships with industry play a crucial role here.”

Thomas Wessel, member of the board responsible for sustainability at Evonik, added: “Evonik has an ambitious sustainability strategy – and we are reliably implementing what we have set out to do: in 2022, Evonik concluded supply contracts for green electricity from wind power.

“In 2024 we are looking forward to the first major supply contracts for solar power. “We are reaching another milestone on our way to converting our externally sourced electricity to 100% green by 2030.”
