Multinational utility ENGIE has acquired two large-scale battery storage projects in Spain from Rolwind Renewables.
The 200MW Palmosilla battery storage project in Tarifa, Cádiz and the 28MW Cerrillo proposal in Álora, Málaga are the largest independent energy storage developments in Spain, the company said.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, and these projects will serve as the foundation for a new generation of storage assets designed to support the electricity grid, improve system stability, and facilitate greater integration of renewable energy into the energy system, the company said in a release.
The two projects represent an investment of over €240m and have also won a joint grant of €70m from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
Loreto Ordóñez, CEO of ENGIE Spain, said: ” The acquisition agreement for these two storage projects reaffirms our strong commitment to renewable energy and the Iberian market.
“Furthermore, it allows us to strengthen our position in the storage segment, a fundamental pillar for consolidating the energy transition.”
Manuel Nevado, CEO of Rolwind Renovables, said: “since 2022, Rolwind has been a pioneer in Spain in its commitment to synchronized energy storage projects.
“Today, the characteristics of our electrical system have confirmed the strategic relevance of this type of technology, due to the flexibility, security, and stability that projects like Palmosilla and Cerrillo provide.”
