SSE has appointed Kirby Group Engineering and Sungrow as main contractors for the 100MW/200MWh Derrymeen battery energy storage system in County Tyrone.
The company said Sungrow will supply the battery technology while Kirby Group Engineering will handle construction and balance of plant works.
SSE added construction activity is expected to continue until late 2027 following site preparation and enabling works earlier this year.
The project is located near Dungannon and will support the integration of renewable electricity onto the grid.
“Mobilisation to site is now under way, with full construction set to commence in the coming weeks,” said Patrick Greene, construction projects director at SSE Renewables.
“The appointment of Kirby Group Engineering and Sungrow marks a significant milestone in advancing the Derrymeen Battery Energy Storage System project.”
“We are proud to support SSE Renewables in the delivery of the Derrymeen BESS project, a key step in accelerating the integration of renewable energy in Northern Ireland,” said Leo Powell, country manager UK and Ireland at Sungrow.
“By supplying our PowerTitan 2.0 battery energy storage system, we are supporting a more flexible grid in the region while reinforcing a strong and lasting collaboration with our key partner, SSE Renewables.”
“This project marks a significant step forward in enhancing resilience across the Northern Ireland electricity network, as SSE Renewables drives decarbonisation and increases the amount of renewable energy available on the network,” said Stephen Kavanagh, business unit leader for power and renewables at Kirby Group Engineering.
