RWE notches first power at 1.1GW Thor

RWE notches first power at 1.1GW Thor

The 1100MW Thor offshore wind farm in Denmark has delivered electricity to the grid for the first time following installation of its first turbine.

RWE said the project, located off Denmark’s west coast near Jutland, is progressing as planned with turbine installation underway.

Energinet added the wind farm is now supplying power into the Danish grid it operates, marking a milestone in the project’s commissioning phase.

Thor is a joint project between RWE, which holds a 51% stake, and Norges Bank Investment Management with 49%, with RWE responsible for construction and operations.

The wind farm will comprise 72 Siemens Gamesa turbines of up to 15MW each and is scheduled to be fully operational in 2027.

Once complete, Thor will be capable of producing enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than one million Danish households.

“Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm is now generating electricity and feeding power into the national grid for the first time,” said Sven Utermöhlen, chief executive officer RWE Offshore Wind.

“Thor is progressing exactly as planned.”

“Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm has reached an important milestone in the green transition,” said Kim Willerslev Jakobsen, senior vice president at Systemansvar in Energinet.

“Green electricity is now flowing in from the North Sea and out through the sockets of up to one million households once Thor wind farm is fully commissioned.”

Danske Commodities has been selected to provide route-to-market services for the Thor offshore wind project developed by RWE.

The company said the 1.1GW wind farm will be the largest offshore wind project in Denmark and will supply green electricity to around one million households once fully commissioned.

Danske Commodities added it will apply its trading expertise to connect Thor’s power production to the market and create value for partners.

“We are proud to join Denmark’s largest offshore wind project as the route-to-market partner for Thor,” said Jakob Sørensen, chief executive officer of Danske Commodities.

“With more than 20 years of experience from the Danish power market, we will apply our trading expertise to connect the power production from Thor to the market and create value for our partners.”
